OH MAN, you guys! This week was a week of recipe failing. I had (supposedly brilliant) ideas in my head that just did not transfer into the deliciousness I thought they would (esp. donuts – omg why can’t I figure it out?!) So frustrating! It’s like writer’s block, but with recipes…so we’ll call it recipe block. Luckily, though, we’ve worked through it ? I’ve come out the other side determined to try donuts at a later date and focus my attention on other things for the time being ? 

I was blessed to grow up in a family that really loves food. Although my dad did most of the cooking, both of my parents are really skilled in the kitchen and know good food when they see it.

One day when I was little, my mama & her best friend spent the ENTIRE day in the kitchen trying to make the perfect vanilla-chai-hot-drink-powder that, like hot chocolate, just needs to be added to some warm milk and boom! Instant vanilla-chai-hot-drink magic. Experimenting with various ratios of spices, creamers, powdered milk, and sugar, they ended up creating the most cozy, deliciously spiced drink that has the most magical, wintery-fall scent. We had jars upon jars of that stuff and drank it daily during the cold months (aka 9 months out of the year in Northern MN). Inspired by my mama’s genius, I set out to recreate that goodness in the form of a white hot chocolate – and dang, you guys. It’s so good ? Finished with some salted caramel sauce, whipped cream, and a sprinkle of cardamom, it’s absolutely WONDERFUL.

So go make a cup of this, pop some popcorn, turn on your favorite movie, grab your cuddliest blanket, and get cozy, y’all.

Chai-Spiced White Hot Chocolate | The Foodwright

Serves 2 


2 c 2% milk

1/2 c vanilla milk chips (I recommend Guittard)

1/2 t vanilla

1/8 t cardamom

1/4 t cinnamon

1/8 t nutmeg

1/8 t ground cloves

dash salt

whipped cream! (of course)

salted caramel sauce! (you don’t need it…but…it’s a good idea)


In a medium-sized saucepan on medium heat, combine the milk and chips. Stir frequently until the chips are melted. Once melted & hot, whisk in the vanilla, spices, and salt, stirring until well combined. Pour into two mugs & enjoy!

    Ugh! I hate when that happens! You begin to question everything when you have recipe fails! This hot chocolate looks incredible! I love the addition of chai!
